Michael Green

from that day:

He was an ______. Everything hateful about the teenage brain. Ignorant yet opinionated, hateful, and crude. "You want to be remembered? Find some fucking ten year old kid with an ice-cream cone and shove it in his face. Bloody his fucking nose if you can. I guarantee you in fifty years, he’ll still be telling that story. That’s fuckin’ immortality, yeah. That’s being famous."

It was easy to dislike him, even on sight. The semiotics of his clothing said he was aggressive, stupid, and mean. His uneven buzzcut matched his acne scars, matched the half smoked American cigarette that sat behind his ear, (looking like he’d fished it from the floor of a dirty men’s room), matched the cheap nylon sports jacket, matched the greasy whine of his voice. His accessories all looked stolen.

I was sitting across the aisle from him on the bus, on my way to see Michael for the last time before I left town, trying to concentrate on reading my lovely new book, and instead building up a quite justifiable loathing for the redneck prick loudly mouthing off beside me. He sat facing backwards in his seat, feet braced against the backrest, all the better to dispense his wisdom to the lapdog thug-kids he was talking to. Within reach, I thought.

"What you do is you shit on the pile of coats, fucking piss all over them, then fade back into the party. Someone will come out, say something fucking stupid, like, "hey, I think someone’s maybe shit on everything," ’cause no one wants to be the fucking guy who says there’s shit, right? And you don’t say a fucking word. No one will know!"

My first impulse was to spook him, my second to drag him off the bus and pop him in the head. The story I was reading spoke of redemption, hatred, the torture of self-knowledge laid bare. I opted for my first idea. Less messy. Only gods and brave doctors know what he might have, anyway. One split knuckle is all it takes. Yuck.

Back in the day, I used to work for this six foot five Russian cowboy ‘from Old Country’ named Boris. A secretly teddy-bear NYC bouncer turned Toronto nightclub owner, he could be easily be the scariest man you might ever meet. I’ve only got one photograph of him, sadly, but in it, he dwarfs everything. It wasn’t his size, though, that was so intimidating, it was how he used his voice.

As the bus pulled through the intersection at 14th and 11th, I stood up, borrowed every actor’s trick of body I know to make myself seem as solid and immovable and as confident and nasty as possible, and I put my hand down hard on the boy’s shoulder. He looked up at me, rattled, surprised, people don’t touch strangers in the city, and I leaned down, met his widened eyes, conjured that wonderful Russian terror and very quietly said, "In my country, we kill children like you."

Then I got off the bus, met Michael, and we had a lovely pot of tea. So there.

The story (1 of 3)

A child is sitting minding his own business. A good person comes along and gives the child the tastiest ice cream in the world. The child licks once, twice… oh, so delicious, feeling every taste, … It`s the best ice cream in the universe.

Something happens, the ice cream is taken away just before the third lick. The child frowns. The child`s mouth opens. The child cries the loudest cry and deepest cry ever. The child`s tears are flowing faster and soon there`s nothing but a river of sadness. Even the best swimmer will not try, lest he downs in sorrow too.

I`m that child; only the river of tears is in my heart. Why? Why do they take the ice cream way. I loved that ice cream!

This reminds of a story that`s longer than I`ll tell. A man was wrongfully arrested during the war, believed to be a spy. After years of war, after years of torture, the man was left alone to die in a rotten jail.

So frail, he sat motionless, in the same position, second after second, minute after minute, year after year. His body was almost dead, yet his mind could experience every moment of this cruel existence.

    Invasion of the plastic animals

Italy’s Cracking Art Group brings a big dose of kitsch to Kampa
    Gallery Review

    By Tony Ozuna
    For The Prague Post
    September 17th, 2008 issue

The area outside Museum Kampa has been guarded the past couple months by 3-meter-high red poodles, with an equally large red bulldog posted on the terrace. The courtyard has been overtaken by huge plastic rabbits — all courtesy of the Cracking Art Group, a provocative and eco-friendly art collective founded in 1993 in the northern Italian town of Biella. These cute creatures, created from recycled plastic, serve as an enticement for a must-see exhibit of the group’s other works in the museum’s gallery space.

After passing the gigantic orange rabbits in the courtyard, visitors are greeted at the gallery entrance by a couple of bright yellow penguins; these serve as peppy little ushers, contrasting with the starker works in the first room of the museum’s permanent collection.

When you enter the room devoted to Cracking Art Group, the dignified space of Museum Kampa is transformed into a candy store of colorful plastic, like a mad scientist’s lab or veterinarian’s office gone wild.

Three large Chihuahuas (2007), painted tip to tail in shocking blue, orange and pink, sit at attention, wearing designer tennis shoes on their front paws. Lime-green penguins gaze into or out of the gallery from their positions at the riverfront windows. They could be monitoring their brood of three dozen yellow penguins situated outside, on a platform along the river.

Indoors, there are also groups of smaller animals from the “Cloned” series (2002) by William Sweetlove. Little green panthers seem to be walking on plastic water with pearls and dried chili peppers immersed in it. Blue panthers walk in water with floating apple slices and pink eggs. Cloned antelopes, horses, lions, giraffes and even orange elephants are bunched in a tool box, floating on water from which mushrooms are sprouting.

Paintings from the “Contamination” series (2008) by Marco Veronese combine photographed images of Old Master paintings, reworked, set under Plexiglas and padded in silicon. These are most effective when Veronese subtly blends his background of silicone drops, merging the colors into images such as butterflies or autumn leaves on top of iconic works like Johannes Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring.

Veronese also exhibits a series of paintings titled “Contemporary Fossils” (2007), which use drops of silicone in combination with images of seashells and fish in the background, or images of the earth with vast seas made from white or clear silicone and the American continents in blue.
Alex Angi is showing nine works from 2005–07 that are like a mass explosion of plastics. His works on the wall are more sculpture than painting — essentially squirts of plastic, like mounds of oozing multicolored tubes, some resembling flower stems with ice cream cones at the ends. Another piece is like an alien totem pole formed by a tall stack of blue spheres with funky outgrowths.

Carlo Rizzetti’s “Migraine” series (2006) has Roman columns smartly painted in bright pink, blue, yellow or toned-down “stone.” Mounted on the columns are heads of an old philosopher, long beard and all, each one offering a different variety of fruits, vegetables and other matter stuffed into the hair and around the neck.

Renzo Nucara has the largest paintings in the show, all from his “Resenfilm” series (2007). These are abstract splatters of paint and molten plastic with objects embedded onto the canvas, including film strips, leaves, assorted paper scraps and even a wrench.

A series of wall-mounted works by the single-named Kicco titled “2008” is the most topical, addressing global warming. Life-size penguins created from clear silicon look like they are made of ice. Some are placed on oval, reddish-colored mirrors crisscrossed with slashes of silicone. Others are lined up in rows and set in ice cubes. Letters on their bodies spell out the word “Frost.” Two other works also feature rows of penguins: “Hot” is written below one group over a sky of gold, and “Ice” is written below the other group, over a sky of blue.

While the collective works of Cracking Art Group are partly inspired by Jeff Koons’ kitsch, they also make a mockery of the recent “evolution” in art history. They are more akin to works by the early Dadaists such as Kurt Schwitters, a great collector of rubbish for his proto-recycled artworks.

With its tacky affront to “fine art,” Cracking Art Group’s activist attitude produces a true art for the people, effectively combining politics and humor and with an eco-ethos.

Should have set the camera to macro for this shot.

So, we had an hour left before we had to leave for the airport and decided to go for one last swim in the ocean. We caught a really big wave and body surfed it in to the shore. We both got pretty roughed up when it crashed. Dazed, we turned to head back out and an even bigger wave was riding in right behind the last one. We both got creamed. I hit my head and a shoulder hard and Colleen hit her jaw and bottom lip. When we came up she was bleeding pretty bad. I thought I was fine, but later my shoulder started swelling up and by the time we got the airport I could hardly use my arm.

At least it took our minds of having to go back home. We did get some funny looks in the airport walking around looking like a domestic abuse poster couple–and with Colleen carrying most of the bags because of my arm.

In true American fashion, the tradition of the annual County Fair is cause for anticipation and celebration and what a fun time awaits!! Good food, great entertainment, old-fashion family amusement and lots of friendly competition for blue ribbons are to be had for all. The main ingredient for any first-place blue ribbon entry is freshness and you can almost smell the enticing aroma of the healthy garden-fresh homegrown fruits and vegetables cascading from the oversized cornucopia. The magical adventures of childhood spent perched upon fanciful sculptured carousel figurines remain a precious memory throughout our lifetime. Our imaginations galloped free as we rode the colorful carousel animals in the adventure of capturing the brass ring.

Kaiser Permanente proudly salutes the antique treasures of the carousel and the artisans who perfected this dazzling American art form. Throughout history the ornately carved menagerie of animals, with elaborate trappings, delicately carved saddles and flashing hooves have been the most popular of Fair rides. These six elegant and richly decorated carousel animals, including a cat, rabbit, swan, turkey, pig and goat, are fashioned after the world famous carousel artists of Dentzel, Looff and Spooner, and sculptured in a style reminiscent of the early 1900′s when the most strikingly beautiful carrousel figures were produced. With overflowing baskets cascading with colorful flowers fresh fruits and vegetables, these updated carousel animals continue to entertain, thrill and fascinate family members of all ages.

Childhood memories and family fun is found upon richly decorated carousel figures laden with baskets of colorful flowers, fresh fruits and wholesome vegetables.

FLOWERING: A masterpiece of intricate floral detail emphasizes the graceful sculpture of the six elegant carousel animals. The elaborate trappings and body coverings have been created from roses, carnations, dendrobium orchids, and chrysanthemums and lilies. The swan and rabbit are neatly groomed in coconut chips, the turkey in red, bronze and orange strawflower petals, the pig in peach lentils, the goat in brown and gold flax seeds and the cat in cream and brown sesame seeds. The cornucopia is weaved in bronze whole strawflowers with produce created in dehydrated carrot and bell pepper granules, red ilex berries, orange and peach lentils and various shades of strawflower petals. The umbrellas are created in yellow strawflower and white sweet rice then trimmed in green Kermit button mums with lavender dendrobium pennants. Beneath the animated carousel animals lush gardens explode in shades of orange, peach and coral roses.

Crab salad, pickled mooli, apple jelly, Bloody Mary sorbet
      Body Cream

Most crab starters are rather pedestrian, often safe but standard in taste and presentation. However, if an image can represent a thousand words, then this dainty course from maze requires no further comment. This would, of course, be a disservice to the number of exceptional components in the dish, which are worthy of recount in their loveliness.

Picturesque and reminding me of a pretty garden scene, an overlapping half-dozen thin apple slices are blanketed by an airy, loose and snow-like tumble of shredded crab meat. Partly a course of interaction, the mixture of the crab found new meaning with each element: apple jelly, mooli (aka daikon radish) and Bloody Mary sorbet. Decorated by shoots and fruity olive oil, the overall dish was not only a balance in refreshing tastes but also in look.

To start, the apple jelly was refreshing, cool and smooth, but with the protein, it added chilled, crisp and silky notes to the crab. The swirl of pickled mooli cream was like bright avocado in texture, and its pretty, delicate flavours and appearance were only heightened by the dotting of a few pearls of caviar against its pale body. Mixed with the crab, the mooli added a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, but was cooling and light (unlike heavier buttery avocado) texture. The Bloody Mary sorbet was clean, smooth, cool and was surprisingly able to retain its shape for quite a period after service. It added a tart, slightly spicy but delicate flavour to the mildly seawater sweet crab which was very nice.

The Windsor Guildhall where Charles and Camilla were married in 2005
        Body Cream

As I was returning to the train station at the end of my long Saturday in Windsor Great Park I happened by this happy couple emerging from a civil wedding ceremony in the same hall where Charles and Camilla had been "hitched" about a month earlier.

Here is a quote from the Wikipedia article about the Royal Wedding:

"The wedding took place at the Guildhall in Windsor at 12.30pm BST (12:30 UTC) on 9 April 2005. Crowds had gathered on the streets since dawn ahead of the service. A civil ceremony was planned because of controversy within the Church of England regarding the remarriage of divorcés. This was attended by all the senior royals apart from the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. When Princess Anne married Timothy Laurence after having divorced Mark Phillips, she chose to do so in the Church of Scotland, the Presbyterian body in Scotland. Remarriage of divorcees is less controversial in the Kirk (as it is known), and the sovereign is an ordinary member of the Kirk. The Prince of Wales and his bride did not elect this course of action.

At the wedding, the couple’s witnesses were Prince William of Wales and the bride’s son, Tom Parker Bowles. In keeping with tradition, the couple’s wedding rings are crafted from 22 carat (92%) Welsh gold from the Clogau St David’s mine in Bontddu. The design of the wedding rings is by Wartski, a London jeweller that has held the Royal Warrant to The Prince of Wales since 1979. The Prince wears his on the small finger of his left hand. For the wedding, the duchess wore a cream-coloured dress and coat with a wide-brimmed cream-coloured hat. For the blessing afterward, she wore a floor-length embroidered pale blue and gold coat over a matching chiffon gown and a dramatic spray of golden feathers in her hair. Both ensembles were by Antonia Robinson and Anna Valentine, London designers who work under the name Robinson Valentine; both hats were made by the Irish milliner Philip Treacy.

The wedding was followed by a televised blessing at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, led by The Archbishop of Canterbury."

        Types of Fire Extinguishers
        Body Cream

Old Fire Extinguishers Colour Coding. The simple identification by our colour coding was replaced by compling with EU regs requiring all fire extinguishers to be red.

Prior to 1st Jan 1997, the code of practice for fire extinguishers in the UK was BS 5423, which advised the colour coding of fire extinguishers as follows:

        Water – Red
        Foam – Cream
        Dry Powder – Blue
        Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – Black
Halon – Green (now ‘illegal’ except for a few exceptions such as the Police, Armed Services and Aircraft).

New extinguishers should conform to BS EN 3, which requires that the entire body of the extinguisher be coloured red. A zone of colour of up to 5% of the external area can be used to identify the contents using the old colour coding shown above.
